Red-rumped Parrots, sometimes called Grass Parrots, are mainly seen foraging on the ground for seeds and insects, in pairs or small flocks, and occasionally in flocks of up to a hundred. Often they associate with other seed-eaters, such as Galahs and Red-browed Finches, and are reasonably common in suburban parks and gardens and on farms.

They generally need old dead eucalypts for nesting hollows, but sometimes use hollowed-out old fence posts. They can be seen perching on road-side fences or powerlines.
